Gender equality is more than a goal in itself. It is a precondition for meeting the challenge of reducing poverty, promoting sustainable development and building good governance. --Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of The United Nations
This is a new event
Microfinance institutions are labeled the poor man’s bank. It is in line with this assertion that Nkong Hill Top has added another red feather to its cap, with the opening of another branch of the Nkong Credit for Development (NC4D), microfinance institution in Menji on Sunday 19 June 2011. The commissioning of the Menji Branch ties with Nkong’s continuous drive to improve on the socio economic status of the rural and urban poor by fighting poverty in all its forms. Business transactions and meetings held in private homes with money stored in suitcases of volunteering individuals will now be a thing of the past as NC4D has not only come to enable the population of this enclaved region to have access to credit but above all to enable them do business transactions within a modern financial system. By fulfilling the wish of the rural population of the Lebialem Division with the creation of a microfinance institution to take care of their financial concerns, Nkong Hill is providing the much needed mechanism for stimulating local economic development.

Microfinance institutions are labeled the poor man’s bank. The commissioning of the Menji Branch ties with Nkong’s continuous drive to improve on the socio economic status of the rural and urban poor by fighting poverty in all its forms. By fulfilling the wish of the rural population of the Lebialem Division with the creation of a microfinance institution to take care of their financial concerns, Nkong Hill is providing the much needed mechanism for stimulating local economic development.
The launching ceremony was presided over by the Senior Divisional Officer for Lebialem Division, Amougou Francois and had in attendance administrative, traditional, and political authorities; the general public, not leaving out groups working with Nkong Hill and staff members of the Nkong Family.
S.D.O Lebialem at Launch
In her welcome statement, the Manager of the Menji Branch, Ms Leke Julia, thanked all and sundry for coming. She assured them that NC4D has come to improve on their lives, saying that NC4D’s services and schemes will go a long way to impact the lives of the entire population of Lebialem Division. She ended by informing the population that all they needed from them to succeed was their dynamism and cooperation as the management of Nkong Hill has put in place a well trained team to accompany them in their business and development ventures.
On behalf of the Board, the Chairperson, Anu Vincent took the population down memory lane as to what prompted the creation of Nkong Hill Top Common Initiative Group (NCIG). NCIG, he said has as overall objective to strive for a world in which human dignity is protected from the ravages of poverty, ignorance, discrimination and violence. It is against this back drop that NC4D came into existence with its full accreditation by COBAC and the Ministry of Finance in November 2008 and July 2009 respectively.. He acknowledged with profound gratitude the support this venture received from the local administration in Menji- the Divisional Delegations of Agriculture and Rural Development, Women’s Empowerment and the Family, Social Affairs; not leaving out those women who have remained committed and steadfast to NWOCA (Nkong Women Cash up), since 2006, and whose dedication and performance has been the source of inspiration and the driving force behind the creation of the Menji Branch of NC4D.
Other speakers included the S.D.O. for Lebialem who thanked the Board and staff of NC4D and lauded their initiative for creating a financial institution in Menji. According to him, this was an indication that they have the development of the entire Lebialem population at heart. In a firm but polite tone, he sounded a terse warning that dealing with finances requires honest people and in no circumstance should the staff of a financial institution be doubted. Last but not the least he urged all socio-cultural groups, CIGs and NGOs in Lebialem Division to open accounts with NC4D.
Mention must be made of the presence of the South West Regional Delegate for Agriculture and Rural Development, Forwang Lawrence, who took off time his busy schedule to be present in Menji to give the occasion and the microfinance institution a special pad on the back.
The mayor of Menji Council, Rtd Colonel Chief Fobellah Daniel, on his part, declared his total support for the initiative while also cautioning the Board and management of the institution to remain worthy of the confidence of the community at all times.
Mayor Menji Council at Launch
The launching proper came after the cutting of the ribbon by the S.D.O flanked by political, administrative and legal authorities of the division. With the cutting of the ribbon, the doors of the micro-finance institution were flung open for the opening of accounts and business transactions to be carried out. More than 100 accounts were opened on this first day.
Queing up to do business
There is every reason for the denizens of Lebialem to put all hands on deck to sustain this developmental gift put at their doorsteps by the management of the Nkong Credit for Development.
